Why Kannada needs its own address
Kannada was recognised as a classical language of India in 2008, with inscriptions going back around fifteen centuries. Its script descends from the Kadamba script and, like Telugu, is rounded because it was written on palm leaves. Kannada is the official language of Karnataka, whose capital Bengaluru is India's largest technology hub, which makes the mismatch between the state's script and the ASCII-only addresses most of its engineers use particularly visible. DataMail added Kannada in 2020, extending native-script addressing to the state's public institutions, schools and small businesses.

A real address, not a translated app
Most email apps just translate their own menus and buttons. DataMail goes further: the address itself, the part before and after the @, can be written in Kannada. That's possible because of Email Address Internationalization (EAI), a technical standard that lets an email address use scripts beyond plain ASCII. How to create a free Kannada email address.
- Install the DataMail app. App Store or Google Play. IDs are created in the app, not on this website. About a minute.
- Choose Kannada (ಕನ್ನಡ). Pick it as your address language and type your name in Kannada using your phone's Kannada keyboard.
- Verify your mobile number. A one-time code by SMS confirms the account.
